Abandoned or Lost animales

Protocol for the care of abandoned or lost animals

We regularly receive a multitude of abandoned animals that are collected by clients or private individuals as part of our Animal Protection work.

Due to our 24 hour opening hours and the human and technical resources available at the Veterinary Centre, we collaborate closely with the Fuente el Saz Town Hall where we are located and the authorities: Local Police and Guardia Civil in the care of animals found lost or abandoned in the towns near our Veterinary Hospital, providing the following services:

Locating owners when they have a chip and veterinary care of the animals, if required, with prior authorisation from the owner, so that all lost animals are recorded on a list for the Town Hall, with the details of the people who have found them for control.

Veterinary care for abandoned or lost animals without a chip

A) Collected by private individuals

The rules of the Veterinary Centre for these cases are:

  • The veterinary expenses are shared 50% with the people who come to the Veterinary Centre with the animals found, being their responsibility for having picked them up, so that they cannot stay in the Hospital unless they need hospital admission. We collaborate financially in all cases so that no abandoned animal is left without veterinary care, and we collaborate with the people who have taken responsibility for collecting them from the street, for the dissemination of the case in order to find a foster home or adoptive parents if they are unable to take them in themselves.
  • In case of not being able or not wanting to take charge of 50% of the veterinary expenses, if required by the animal collected, we will help them through the Protectoras with which we collaborate, and the person who takes the animal to the Veterinary Centre must be responsible for contacting them to transfer responsibility for the case, since under no circumstances can the animals stay in our facilities without someone taking charge and responsible for it: We are a private centre where animals are only housed for temporary hospitalisation, with an owner, and we cannot take charge of housing abandoned animals, as we do not have the space to accommodate all the cases that require it and it is not part of our function as a 24-hour veterinary hospital.

Each locality has its own rules and legislation regarding where to place these types of cases in order to find the best option for them, and we always collaborate with each case with all the localities that ask for our help.

B) Picked up by the authorities (local police or Guardia Civil) without a chip.

  • Once it has been verified that they do not have a chip, we assess whether they require veterinary assistance and provide them free of charge if necessary, always trying to contact the Animal Shelters with which we collaborate to relocate them to a shelter or adoption centre.
  • The authorities that collected the animal will apply the regulations in force in the locality of the animal found to take it to the collection centre for abandoned animals or animal association they have an agreement with at the time. We will also collaborate in the dissemination and monitoring of the same to search for an urgent adopter.

***Many thanks to all the people that collaborate regularly so that all the animals found lost can reunited with their owners, and so that all stray animals can have a chance***
