Neutering our pets has many benefits for their health, it helps to protect animals in general by helping to avoid overpopulation and abandonment in kennels and shelters that are saturated with dogs and cats of all breeds and ages.

Recommendations for the neutering of pets

We recommend castration in the following cases:

• Behavioural problems: aggressiveness, urine marking….
• Hereditary pathologies: such as animals with dysplasia, cryptorchidism (retained testicles that do not descend), allergies…
• Prevention of pathologies: breast or prostate tumours, venereal diseases.
• Population control: if we have males and females living together in our home.

The most advisable age for surgery is before one year of age or before the first oestrus, as animals recover less the younger they are. We avoid unwanted pregnancies, reducing the hormonal influence on various pathologies such as breast tumours in females, and they can be castrated at any age with a good pre-surgical check-up.

Veterinary surgery

This is a routine surgery, performed under safe general anaesthesia and adequate monitoring, and does not entail any risks for the animals.

We recommend a pre-surgical examination of the animals including a complete blood analysis and electrocardiogram to assess the existence of possible pathologies and determine the appropriate anaesthetic protocol for each case depending on: age, sex, existence of pathologies…

They will need antibiotherapy and care for a week and usually recover after 2 or 3 days.

The post-surgical use of an Elizabethan collar is also recommended to prevent the animals from licking the wound excessively after surgery.

In females, ovariohysterectomy or surgical removal of the ovary and uterus is recommended, so that they do not have oestrus.

In males, orchiectomy or surgical removal of the testicles is recommended, rather than vasectomy to reduce the hormonal effect on behaviour or health.
