Having a beloved pet diagnosed with cancer can be very hard. But there is hope. Currently there are many treatments for pets with cancer and new treatments are continuously being developed. For some forms of cancer, treatment can end up in “cure.” For those cancers where cure is not possible, treatment can greatly improve patients’ quality of life and improve survival.
Cancer is not a disease for which there is a unique treatment. There are many different types of cancer and the treatment will depend on the type of cancer your pet has.
Some patients can be treated with surgery, chemotherapy, radiation or a combination of these therapies. They usually recommend diagnostic tests, such as blood tests, ultrasound, x-rays, biopsies, CT, or magnetic resonance to determine if your pet’s cancer has spread and thus assess the “stage” of the cancer. These tests are important to help determine which treatment options are best for your pet and determine the prognosis.

Cancer therapies are generally well tolerated in animals with minimal or no side effects. Most pets that receive cancer therapy have a good or excellent quality of life while being active. The combination of conventional and complementary therapies can promote healing, reduce symptoms, improve quality of life and improve the survival of cancer patients
